The first tank of this series was built in 1961. The German tank was one of the most advanced tanks in the world.
In the early 70's a program was adopted to upgrade the tank step by step. The upgraded Leopard 1A1 received a two plane armament stabilizer, a heat protection cover for the gun barrel, and fording equipment. The Leopard 1A2 has increased turret armour and night vision sights without backlighting. The Leopard 1A3 is fitted with a new cast turret with multi-layer armour plate.
In 1974, the production of the Leopard 1A4 was started. The tank was distinguished from previous models by its advanced fire control system. A total number of approximately 4000 Leopard tanks of all types were built in Western Germany. Leopard tanks in the 1970's were delivered to many countries of the world. Some countries purchased a license to manufacture. Tanks of this type are in the inventories of 10 countries around the world.
